It's Friday now in Bluefields and we have finished our project. It was probably the hardest I've ever worked considering the sun, the heat, and the back-breaking (at least for me) work. But it was fun to work together and it was like hitting your head with a hammer...it felt very good when it stopped. As soon as we stopped we would go in and take a cold shower. That was the only kind of shower but it really felt wonderful. The mixer of sweat, sun-block, misquito repelant and sweat made you feel pretty grimy!
The mission here is so effective in reaching these poor (economically speaking) people with the gospel and helping them with their needs. It is unbelievable how hard the missionaries work, how long their days and the impact they are having! I have never experienced anything like it before...their integrety, hard work and great results are hard to come by. Ketley and Vitall Pierre are the missionaries. They are from Haiti and the Dominican Republic, black and beautiful!
This afternoon we are going into Bluefields proper.... we are kind of on the outskirts of the town now. There are interesting stores that you would never see any where. One appliance store I darter into as we were stopped for a moment the other day had a whole row of treadle sewing machines for sale for about $100.00 each.
People here live in the most unbelivable conditions. I mean whole families in a one room shack. Some living conditions are better but all very crowded. However some of these same people have cell phones! The pastor of the church plant in Kukra where we went on Wednesday lived in a three room primative house but carried a cell phone. Communication is really important everywhere. For this pastor it was his life-blood to be able to communicate here with the missionaries and the parent church.
We will go tomorrow by plane to Manaqua at 10:00 AM and spend the day in the Capital city site seeing and shopping in a huge craft market we hear about there. Then we stay overnight in a Hotel by the airport to fly home at 7:00 AM on Sunday morning.
It's been a great experience for Greg and Me.
